A pre-filter is the primary stage of a filtration system designed to capture large debris—such as dust, hair, lint, and sediment—before air or water reaches the main, higher-efficiency filters. It acts as a protective shield, extending the lifespan of costly main filters (like HEPA or RO membranes) and ensuring optimal system efficiency. They are commonly made of mesh, synthetic foam, or fiber.
